One of many Emma Watson lame excuses for quiting Brown University. Because she was in denial. I can disprove this with ease.
Interview from June 2011 Sunday Style Magazine Now, she is taking a term off, back in glitz’s grasp, the face of a luxury brand and filming a movie. But how come you’re here at all, not living the campus life you seemed so desperate for? "I was in denial," she says. "I wanted to pretend I wasn’t as famous as I was. I was trying to seek out normality, but I kind of have to accept who I am, the position I’m in and what happened." You mean Potter? "Yeah," she replies. What happened to you? Do you have a disease? are you dying? Well read here. From telegraph.co.uk 2007 "I think there were about 18 of us,' she says, 'and we weren't sure who we were auditioning for, but I knew I wanted to be Hermione. I had no interest in any other part. I felt I really was Hermione.' She then went through a rigorous round of auditions and screen tests and pretty quickly she realised she was a contender for the role she had been dreaming about. "Actually, I was obsessed with it,' she says. 'My mother was so worried about me. She tried to talk to me about how other opportunities would come up, but I wouldn't listen. I had so much invested in it.' Now she says that she thinks it's incredible she got the part. 'I just tell myself I won the lottery, really.' From iheartwatson.net Vogue UK: December 2010 “That was never going to happen. I soooooooo wannted to be Hermione. Even if I’d been ill, even if I was dying, I would’ve found a way to school that day.”
Echee says: First off she was well aware of her fame status. In fact she talked about it religiously over the years. Anytime she had a chance she brought up "fame" or "famous" or referenced it to describe various troubles in her life from dating, trouble in the public and even spoke of it as she was attending Brown. So all this bit about being in denial to me is such plain hogwash. It was all about a movie role with Perks of being a wallflower and Lancome but if that was put out there her image as this Hermione like persona would take a hit. Because she's "not supposed" to be about fame. That's because she tells us she's bigger than that. She's had many months to retool her reasons. A few examples of her fame quotes below:
1.) From dailychilli.com 2010 "I was scared before I came to Brown - that I wasn't going to be able to both a career and normal life. People would think that I didn't deserve to have both: 'You're famous"
2.) From people.com 2009 Emma Watson can't wait to head to the U.S. for college this fall but has one requirement for her roommate: no diehard fans. "As long as there are no Harry Potter posters on the wall, I will be fine and happy,"
3.) From community.livejournal.com 2007 How do people react when they see you on the street in London? Do they scream, do they touch you? "People in the UK are very respectful. Americans tend to scream, to clap, to make a big deal about it, and it can be embarrasing ."
3.) From aceshowbiz.com 2009 "Being famous complicates things much more. I suppose that some boys feel a bit intimidated by me and stay on their guard,"
5.) From flixster.com 2009 "I don't think my fame helps when it comes to dating. I think relationships are complicated enough without having people write that you're breaking up or getting back together or cheating on one another every five minutes"
6.) From emmawatsonsource.webs.com 2011 So boys are quite intimidated by making a pass at you? "That’s why it’s really hard to have a love story for me. I’m a famous actress. I’m usually surrounded by people who take care of me. And I'm shy.
7.) From people.com 2007 "I'm not the girl they (talking of her friends)teenager because I have been Hermione for such a long time."
8.) From dailychilli.com May 9th 2010 talking about what it's like to be famous "Emma agrees fame has a huge buzz which is hard to match. She told Vanity Fair. "You get these massive highs. It’s like you sort of have a stage of hundreds of hundreds of people at a movie premiere, and it’s lights going off everywhere, and you don’t have a second to think, and you have a million people doing everything for you because you’re so busy trying to do whatever. And you go from this hyper-intenseness, and then you’ll finish your movie, and it’ll just stop. Or you’ll go to your hotel room and there will just be silence. And I can’t explain it, but it freaks you out."
9.) From dailymail.co.uk april 22nd, 2011. Before her classes began in 2009, Watson was hopeful that she would be treated like any other student. She said at the time: 'I do hope that it will be only a short time before I am known as "Emma Watson, the student from the UK" rather than "Emma Watson who starred in those Harry Potter films".'
10.) From http://missemmawatson.tumblr.com/ Burberry?” Are you fighting your image? That’s so interesting. It’s amazing. I never anticipated that those Burberry images, that Burberry campaign would have such a big impact. But it really has. Somebody came up the other day and said “you’re the girl from the Burberry campaign?” and I was like “Yes. I am!” But that’s not usually what I’m known for. I guess it’s flattering but I hope that that would never take away from a role I was playing. I hope that doesn’t get in the way too much
11.) From iheartwatson.net Sunday Times Nov 2010 "Finally, I’m starting to be able to say, ‘Yes, I’m famous. Yes, I’m in the films. You’re just going to have to deal with it.’ I’m not going to tiptoe around anymore."
12) From showbizspy.com Nov 2010 (Speaking about Brown University)"The amazing thing is that everyone here is interested in their own lives, so they aren't nosy about mine. I'm used to people being intrusive and gossipy, but I can be anonymous."
13.) From iheartwatson.net Cinemanía Magazine Nov 2010 "As we three have been getting more famous, out of Harry Potter, I have felt that. But the truth is that, from any characters you could be associated with, Hermione is wonderful, she’s a heroine. I feel blessed.”
14.) From ohnotheydidnt.livejournal.com 2008, What advice would you give teen queen Miley Cyrus? "I would never tell anyone what to do. All I know is that it's hard, really hard being famous.
Thanks to the anon that left a comment we have this youtube clip that lasts 17 seconds showing Emma has always been fully aware of her fame and what pitfalls comes with it. I can sympathize with her. Her fans can be dumbasses. Thanks again anon.
15.) From iheartwatson.net Oct 2010 Empire mag, "Brown is a small campus so everyone is used to seeing me around. No one takes a second glance anymore, which is wonderful.”
16.) From brainyquote.com, "My friends are all really nice about my fame, they're just curious really, they ask lots of questions"
BACK TO THE SUNDAY STYLE MAGAZINE
She says someone had a go at her the other day for accepting the advertising gig if her aim was nobly to sidestep public life. But she has made her peace with it. "I said, ‘Do you honestly think that me doing a Lancôme campaign is going to make me any less or more famous than doing Harry Potter?’ I have to accept Harry Potter is the biggest film franchise of all time. I have to just roll with it."
Echee says: Umm.... yes. Potter is basically a child's film with the last two installments that can go across every demographic and Lancome is geared towards older adults, preferably woman who will once again like they always see you in TV ads and various other magazines but this time for perfume and make-up. That and the fact she's now in with Harvey Weinstein who has has made many actresses careers that were affiliated with Lancome and also now Emma is wearing his wife's dresses to event. Plus Julia Roberts is Emma's favorite actress who also did Lancome and was in with Weinstein.I think she wants mega-fame bad.
BACK TO THE INTERVIEW
Recently, rumours did the rounds that Watson left Brown because she was being given a tough time for her star status. This Infuruates her. "It made me so sad when all this stuff came out that I left Brown because I was being bullied. It made no sense at all. Brown has been the opposite. I’ve never even been asked for an Autograph (click here PLEASE!) on campus. I threw a party for nearly 100 students and not a single person put a photo on Facebook." For someone who is in denial of her fame she sure understands she's is on the internet. From peoplestylewatch.com April 2011 Emma Admits. “That’s why I banned myself from reading everything about myself on the Internet.”
Echee says: Did she not just state above in my first quote she was in denial of her fame? If that is the case why care about the pictures on facebook. Also she is doing interviews in national publication print, radio and TV for a franchise she's been associated with for ten years. She's not fresh on scene by any stretch when it comes to fame. She kept her face out there while at Brown anyway with interviews and magazine shoots. Plus why did she sign a huge modeling contract in the first place if education was important? It made her more famous. Somehow she forgets about all the screaming fans, autographs, premieres, free stuff and accolades along with all the other things. Looks to me along with the quotes I placed above she was very aware as to her fame since she was trying to protect it with this request.
So she was in denial as to being famous but constantly used it to described why her dating life is bad because she Intimidates men? Umm, ... I don't get it? Check this one out as well, Emma Watson deceiving us again
Update: July 5th, 2011 From www.dailyrecord.co.uk , "Emma has even been recognized while travelling in Bangladesh and Kenya, so are there moments when she wishes she was "normal"? She said: "I have moments, but I think it's more like, 'I wish things were more simple. Why does everything have to be so complicated and why do I have to think everything through so much? Why can't I have more freedom, privacy, etc?' "
Emma Watson on Daybreak TV interview Europe. Interviewer: Did you feel it would be as successful? Is there ever a time when you say "Wow!"? Emma: "I think it was around the third film, when fame really began to rise and I think particularly when the last book came out, especially in England. It took over the country, wherever you went there were buses, photos, and books ... and it's like, it's upsetting.

UPDATE JULY 7TH 2011From thisislondon.co.uk jULY 7TH, 2011 Rumours of bullying are far wide of the mark, she stresses; US students often spend their third years abroad). She is playing hard to get with casting directors and there will be no acting after she completes the US indie film, The Perks of Being a Wallflower, her first post-Potter role. "I will be focusing solely on my studies. People were very respectful at Brown of my privacy - and I just hope that will be the same at home." She hopes to live in college and may even do student drama, "if it feels right".
UPDATE JULY 9TH 2011 From heraldsun.com.au July 9th, 2011, "Fame was never something I ever aspired to and it's not something I aspire to now really.
UPDATE JULY 12TH, 2012 From www.popsugar.com On handling her fame: "It became easier to handle once I accepted it. Once I sort of came to terms with it, definitely. I feel fortunate in it that I’ve never known, never really known what its like to have total freedom and anonymity. It’s not as though I had it and then all of a sudden it got taken away from me. It was something I grew up knowing and a process that happened gradually. I’ve never known anything else. So in a way, I guess that’s a blessing." On realizing how famous she is: "It was when I was in a shantytown in Bangladesh (summer 2010) and a boy stopped me in the street and said, 'You’re the girl from Harry Potter.' And I just. . . there’s no where in the world I can go that almost, it feels, that isn’t somehow touched by this film franchise. It’s absolutely amazing. It reaches the farthest, furthest corner of the earth in the least expected places you would expect. So that was a real, 'Wow I really can’t go anywhere. This is incredible.'"
